Muscular cramps, spasms and shooting pains during pregnancy.

Muscle contractions or cramps typically happen in the legs or feet and as your uterus grows it puts pressure on your pelvic veins. This pressure slows down the returning blood flow from your legs and causes blood to pool around your feet and ankles. Your body is also working extra hard and may become deficient in essential nutrients such as magnesium and

vitamin B6. Cramping is typically worse towards the end of the day and it is important to put your feet up (literally) as often as possible. Staying hydrated helps with cramps. Maternity support hosiery (waist high stockings) can help improve blood flow return and circulation. Gentle stretches, swimming and staying active are also helpful.

Check with your Doctor or Midwife if one of your legs or calves is more swollen than the other and feels painful, hot or tender to the touch then it could be a blood clot and should be checked immediately by a Doctor. You will probably experience lower backache during the later stages of pregnancy as well as other minor aches and pains as your body adjusts and stretches to accommodate your baby and your center of gravity alters. This may also cause back spasms or shooting pains. It is important to consult with your Midwife or Doctor if you experience very painful back pain.
